Astronomy: : By George Kurian

The New York Times, in their editorial has written about "News From Home" which is about our mother Earth's position in the Milkyway Galaxy which is very interesting. Upto the recent time, astronomers had believed that we were sitting some 28,000light -years out- spinning around the centre of the Milky Way and the speed is about half a million miles per hour. But the new observations reveal that we are travelling much faster, at about 600,000 miles per hour ! The finding is also that Milky Way is much broader and has 50 percent more mass than what we had thought previously.Another finding is that a second major arm of stars spiraling outward from the Galaxy's Central disk. The wonderful thing is that we do not feel that the speed of spinning. What a wonderful event!!We are blended to the structure and motion of the Milky Way. We can see our neighbour Andromedia Galaxy from far but we connot see our Galaxy from far as we are embedded within.

When we look beyond, there are so many galaxies out there in the known Universe.
