‘Mother’ is the sweetest name on earth. The Virgin Mary, the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the most prominent figures in the Christendom. Her life was characterized by Faith. Humility and Obedience to the will of God. She is loved and admired by millions of people all over the world. Angel Gabriel, appeared to Mary and announced that she has found favor with God, and she will be the mother of Jesus, the Son of the Most High. Mary questioned the angel, “how will this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the Holy One to be born will be called the Son of God. For nothing is impossible with God.” In an astonishing display of faith, Mary affirmed her servant-hood to the Lord and humbly submitted to his will. (Luke 1:34-38)

Also in her song, she glorified the Lord, “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for He has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generation will call me blessed.” (Luke 1:46-48) Strong in faith, humble in spirit and obedience to God, are a few of Blessed Mary’s traits. She has acknowledged her salvation through her beloved Son Jesus Christ. Moreover, she is full of grace. She is a Roll model for all mothers. Mary also experienced at times of joy and sorrow. What joy when the Christ-child was born! (Luke 2:7) What excitement when the shepherds and later the wise men came to worship Him. What uneasiness when Simeon the just prophesied that a sword would pierce her soul! (Luke 2:35) and what heart wrenching grief as Mary watched her beloved Son dying on the cross! But her seasons of motherhood did not end with the terrible scene. She rejoiced that He rose from the grave, and she is now in heaven with Him.

It is an amazing thing to see the influence of a godly mother in her children’s lives. Her unconditional love and dedication give them confidence, acceptance, security, and understanding to love and care for others. She is there when her children need a word of comfort, a loving touch, a warm hug and most importantly a patient and listening ear. A good Christian mother will never takes a back seat in instructing her children to love and trust God and His beloved Son Jesus Christ. Abraham Lincoln said,
“No man is poor who has a godly mother.”
About B.C.700., King Lemuel, while reflecting on what his mother had taught him, wrote the following, “A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies. Her husband has full confidence in her and lacks nothing of value. She brings him good, not harm all the days of her life… She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy… Her children arise and call her blessed, her husband also, and he praises her. Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all…
a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” (Proverbs 31)
Let us praise the Lord for mothers who not only care for their children physically but also nurture them spiritually. Mothers like that are indispensable.

My own mother has gone from this world to be with the Lord. Although it has been many years now, I still have sweet memories of her. On Mother’s Day while I remember my mother, I honor my wife for all the sacrifices she makes for my family. Perhaps you too have been blessed with a godly mother. May you have time to reflect on those precious memories of her, who for all these years prayed for your bright future and godly life.
Let all our mothers know this Mother’s Day that we love them for what they have done for us. Beloved Mothers,

Thank you, Lord, for motherhood with all its vale of tears,
Their rejoicing moments never dimmed through all the many tears. Amen
