But go and learn what this means: `I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." Matt 9:13 Like the Pharisees, we would rather fast (sacrifice) than show mercy. Today, the Word of God is greatly challenging us to have mercy towards critical people, impatient people, friends who grumble and are moody, irritable people at home or at our place of work. To be patient and not angry, because someone messes up our day – even in that situation Jesus says show mercy, compassion, understanding. For Jesus, mercy and compassion, understanding, kindness and generosity are more important than sacrifice. Let us pray for the grace to be merciful and compassionate over the easier sacrifice of fasting.
(Thanks Jane for explaining clearly what the Lord would like us to do. Very Good). New World
