KINDNESS RETURNED WITH INTEREST- BY MOLLY VARGHESE

MOLLY VARGHESE WRITES ANOTHER FACT OF LIFE.- A REAL LIFE EXPERIENCE!!
It happened about twenty years ago. We just moved into our house, near X’mas time. That day, I was with my two boys at home, and outside a snow-storm! The snow was accumulating steadily passing 7 – 8 inches and more was coming. I was on the phone with my husband, and the boys were playing in the family room. Suddenly I saw a car coming into the lawn from the far end of the property, running over the plants, which served as fence.

I told my husband, something is happening. Then I heard the door-bell rang. I disconnected the phone and opened the door. There was a man standing at the door. He mumbled something, which I didn’t understand, and walked away and then the car also went off the lawn. After about half an hour a tall and he and a police officer came to the house and told me, “there was an accident, a car skidded in the snow and ran over the plants and came into the lawn. The driver is willing to pay for the plants.” I was so quick to answer him. I said, “Oh! Tell him not to worry. Plants will grow again. I am a nurse, if he needs any help, please tell me.” The Police officer gave me an open smile and said that the driver was o.k, and left.

The next year X’mas time came again! On a Saturday, I was at work and my husband was alone at home. The door-bell rang and my husband opened the door. There was a man at the door. He said to my husband, “I was hoping that nobody would be at home.” My husband said, “What !” Then the man smiled and said, “Oh! Last year I had an accident and I ruined your plants. And your wife was very kind to tell me not to worry about the plants at all. According to the police officer, she even offered help. Now I came to plant new plants in those spots. Since you are here, come, let us plant them together.” Then both of them together went and planted the plants.

During the conversation, the man told my husband that he had a very bad experience in the past. And that, when his son was riding the bicycle and went to their neighbor’s lawn by skidding, he had to pay them a big amount. That is why he offered money to us. Then, he realized that there are people who do not worship money!

Today, those plants are grown big, covering the lawn like fence. But they do make me smile and be proud of my mother, as she is the one who taught me to be caring to others!
