ST JEROME: A BRILLIANT SAINT

ST JEROME

"Most of us have had contact with St Jerome through
the Vulgate and those fanciful portraits of him, in which one
discovers the saint hard at work at an elaborately carved oaken
desk, dressed in a robe of a Renaissance cardinal, and
with a lion for his companion.

But the real Jerome,...strong to love and hate---his letters to
friends and tracts against heresy demonstrate both these
qualities---with an unquenchable admiration for the pagan
authors of Greece and Rome balanced ---with the preoccupation
with the ascetic life of the Church of the fourth century..."
