WHAT HAPPENS AFTER WE DIE?

By Thomas Kalappurayil
There are different teachings out there regarding this subject. My intention is to look at what the Bible teaches on this subject and it is not an attempt to discredit any other teachings or beliefs. I request you to please read this carefully and prayerfully and check it with the Bible texts and then make your own judgment. All the Bible quotations in this article are taken from the New King James Version.

If we want to know what our state is after we die, we have to know how we were created. So we shall look how God created Adam, the first human being. Genesis 2:7 says “and the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being”. Part of the punishment after Adam sinned against God is given in Gen 3:19 “In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground. For out of it you were taken for dust you are and to dust you shall return”. So this means

Dust + Breath of Life = Human Being

Now let us look at what happens when we die. Eccle12:7 says “Then the dust will return to the earth as it was and the spirit will return to God who gave it.” Here the spirit means the breath of life. Look at Eccle 3:19-21 “For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals, one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has not advantage over animals, for all is vanity. All go to one place; all are from the dust, and all return to dust. Who knows the spirit of the sons of men which goes upward, and the spirit of animal, which goes down to the earth?” Also look at Psalm 90:3 which talks about the power of God,“ You turn man to destruction and say ‘return, O children of men”. Additionally, Job 7:7 says “Oh, remember that my life is a breath”. Again in Job 14:10-12 we read “But man dies and is laid away; indeed he breaths his last and where is he? As water disappears from the sea, and a river becomes parched and dries up, so man will not awake nor be roused from their sleep. All these scriptures show that we are sleeping or do not exist until Jesus’ second return, just as we did not exist before we were born.
Now let us examine whether our spirit praise or worship God after we die. Eccle. 9:5 says “For the living knows that they will die; but the dead know nothing, and they gave no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten”. Also in Eccle. 9:10 we read “whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work of device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going”. Again in Psalm 115:17 the scripture says “The dead do not praise the Lord, not any who go down into silence”. Also Isaiah 38:18 & 19 say “For sheol cannot thank you, death cannot praise you; those who go down to the pit cannot hope for your truth.
