"Six days before the Passover Jesus came to Bethany, the home
of Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead... Mary took a pound
of costly perfume made of pure nard, anointed Jesus feet, and wiped
them with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of perfume.

But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (the one who was to betray him)
said, "Why was this perfume not sold for three hundred denarri and
the money given to the poor? (He said this not because he cared about
the poor, but because he was a thief. He kept the common purse and used
to steal what was put into it). Jesus said, "Leave her alone. She bought it
so that she might keep it for the day of my burial. You always have the
poor with you but you do not always have me.."

* The anointing of the feet was a step for the preparation of a corpse for
a burial. This anointing is symbolic in a way such that Mary is doing
an implicit prophecy about the death of Jesus and his burial.

Jesus words are not really discouraging help for the poor. On the other hand,
burial of the dead is also a work of mercy.

It is also interesting to note thatMary anoints Jesus with love and care. It was reminiscent of the time when she sat on the Lord's feet while Martha was busy with other things. This is a lesson for us to focus on Jesus in our daily lives. Simply adore the Lord. Then it seems that the Lord is saying to us, "Mary has chosen the better part; to spend time with the Lord in love and adoration."
