And God said, "This is the sign of the covenant which I make between you and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations. I set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth. When I bring clouds over the earth and the bow is seen in the clouds, I will remember my covenant which is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. When the bow is in the clouds, I will look upon it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is upon the earth. God said to Noah, "This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all the flesh that is upon the earth. The Word of the Lord. (Gen 9:12-17)
"The Fathers and the ecclesiastical writers saw this as the first proclamation of the Son of God." It is through the clouds that God's beloved Son is taken up into heaven and through the clouds that God's Son will pass in the Second Coming. Hence, Jesus, the perfect reflection of the Heavenly Father is the Sign and the rainbow is pointing towards this great revelation.
A covenant is two-way, not one-way. As God has loved and extended His mercy towards us, we have a responsibility in the covenant---to love and worship God alone and to also love others as ourselves. Let us pray today that God will grant us the grace and the strength to fulfill our role in the covenant!
Lord, hear our prayer. In Jesus' Most Holy Name. Amen.
