ST PETER CLAVER: APOSTLE OF THE SLAVES#FORWARDED BY CYNTHIA ABEGAIL

ST PETER CLAVER

" Son of impoverished gentlefolk, he was sent for education
to the Jesuit College of Barcelona. Frightened at the whole idea
of the dedicated life, frightened---after embracing it... he now
shuddered at the irrevocability of ordination.

In Claver's time, slaves, victims were packed in bundles of six,
neck and ankles chained together, wedged under decks were neither
sun or moon could penetrate, in a stench into which no white officer
could put his head for fear of fainting. About a third died on board;
out of a cargo of five hundred, one hundred twenty died in a night.
Among these slaves, Peter Claver laboured unceasingly for thirty-
eight years.

He spent his time upon two hospitals: St Sebastian, a general one and
St Lazarus, his favourite restricted to lepers. When a ship signalled,
he went to the port, with medicines, disinfectants...he washed them,
dressed their wounds and mothered them.

Do you want a hero? Do you want a man co-crucified with Christ.
You have him. Peter Claver."
