"Blessed are the poor in spirit"

"Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven." (Matt 5:11)

In the Old Testament, the poor are referred as the ones without material possessions.  In the New Testament, Matthew added the word in spirit.  The poor in spirit are the ones who place themselves before God and those who act humbly before Him!

This is not an easy thing to do.  One is aware how we need many things in life: clothing, food, shelter and many more.  Yes, those things could be a part of our life but what we are talking about is how we are aware of our dependence on God.  When we eat, we know that we will not survive without God.  When we have our abode, it ultimately comes from God.  Everything comes from God, even your very existence.  When a person recognise and affirm that truth, he is not only humble and lowly but truly poor in spirit!

Let us pray today that God will grant us wisdom to recognise

our helplessness without Him.  Lord hear our prayer.  In Jesus Name, Amen
