THE WIDOW'S MITE: REFLECTION BY MARIA CASSIA AUSTERO
And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched
the people putting money in the offering box. Many rich people
put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small
copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples
to him and said to them, "Truly I say to you, this poor widow
has put in more than all those who are contributing to the
offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance,
but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all

that she had to live on.
Mk 12: 41-44
* Lord Jesus had made it clear that it is not how much we put in the
treasury of the Church that matters. What is important is the amount
we put for God's work relative to what we have.
On the other hand, we do not have to take literally --- the parable shown!
This story does not refer only to money but could refer also to our
talents and treasure. "When you were given more, more is expected
of you." If you were blessed with gifts of knowledge and wisdom, you
are expected to share these gifts to the world! This is for the benefit of
one's lost brothers or sisters.
Aside from that, from the abundance of one's heart comes a treasure.
"Where your treasure is, there your heart will be." If one's treasure is God,
then one is bountifully rich and could give everything to others and to the
Church to build up God's Kingdom.
Let us give our time for the service ---
at God's calling, wholeheartedly, without stinginess, with joy and peace
in our hearts!
Maria Cassia Austero
