The Baby in a Manger: Reflection by Cynthia Abegail

“The shepherds hurried away and they found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger.  When they saw the child, they repeated what they have been told about him, and everyone who heard it was astonished at what the shepherds said to them.  As for Mary, she treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart.  (Lk 2: 16-21).

What the shepherds said about what they have been told about Jesus is truly astonishing.  A virgin conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit!  It is beyond earthly terms.  The Word made flesh-the Incarnation!  He is the past, the present and the future.

How about our Blessed Mother who pondered all these things in her heart?  Mary, our mother could be surprised too, when she said in The Annunciation, “How can this be when I am a virgin?”  Yet, at this time in the fulfilment of the Incarnation, she treasured all of this things in her heart and she pondered deeply!  In the same way, taking Mary as our model of faith, let us ponder all of these things in our heart.  Let us rest our hearts in Him, Jesus—Our Saviour and Redeemer.

How humbling should be when the shepherds saw the baby in the manger.  Imagine them clad in shepherd’s poor clothing, but God deemed them as precious in His sight.  When we are poor, we should not be ashamed but we should realise what we are worth.  In God’s eyes, all are equal.  Rich or poor, beautiful or ugly...He loves us even though we are sinners!  This is why Jesus came into the world.  God sent His son to save us.  We can’t save ourselves.  We need God to save us from our troddenness.  Let us rejoice in this season of Christmas and welcome Emmanuel, “God is with us” in our lives.  Alleluia!
