Yahweh said to Moses, “Go down at once, for your people whom you brought here from Egypt have become corrupt. They have quickly left the way which I ordered them to follow. They have cast themselves a metal calf, worshipped it and offered sacrifice to it, shouting, “Israel, here is your God who brought you out of Egypt! Yahweh then said to Moses, “I know these people, I know how obstinate they are! So leave me now, so my anger can blaze at them and I can put an end to them! I shall make a great nation out of you instead.” Moses tried to pacify Yahweh his God.
We are all totally imperfect; have predisposition to sin. But the sin of old Israel is beyond compare. It is utter idolatry which God abhors! They made a golden calf and announced it as their god. We may think, “Have they gone out of their mind?” It’s a deplorable state and truly deserve to die coz they have insulted an ever loving and compassionate God.
God has chosen Moses as a prophet to His people. If Moses has not been there trying to pacify God, the blaze of anger of God should have struck them. Moses was able to pacify God by recalling the names of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and God’s promise to them.
Likewise, here and now, we could have pacifiers like Pope Francis, priests, evangelists and church leaders and most importantly Mother Mary, saints and Angels who could beg God to have mercy on His people. Let us follow our spiritual leaders to beg and pray that God relents on the punishment that we may deserve! God’s mercy is infinite! What we can do only is pray, wait and pray…
